Our Whole Child kiddos love to build! It's an interest we've seen growing in our kids for many weeks, and so we decided to challenge them with a new building and engineering activity.

Some of our students previously made ramps out of our wooden boards in the front yard, but we wanted to provide different tools to see how they might build new kinds of ramps. Recently we took some donated building supplies on our nature walks and discovered that we could make them into extra long ramps and roll plastic balls as well as corks and spools down them....

It's hard to believe that December is almost here! We had a great Thanksgiving week last week with our kiddos on Monday and Wednesday.

We started both of our days with talking about the word "Thankful" and what it means to be thankful as well as some of the things we're thankful for. Some of our friends said that during Thanksgiving we eat a big meal and have fun with our families!

A few of the things our friends mentioned they were thankful for were "My Gorilla Family," "All the people of the world," and "Mixing up colors"! After talking about wh...

Busy bodies and busy minds at the studio!

*Number & Letter Projector Invitation*

The light table is gone and a new machine has taken its place! The kiddos were very excited to explore our projector! The large letters and numbers sparked their interest in the beginning.

R placed the letter "D" on the projector. F said, "That's in my name!" R responded by saying, "No, this is in your name" and placed the letter "F" on the projector. F replied, "They're both in my name!"

The children grew tired of the letters and grabbed the fall manipulatives and rocks...

*Number & Letter Projector Invitation*

"What is this thing?" E excitedly asked as he came through the door.

We introduced our new "machine" to our friends and explained that it is a projector for casting images onto our wall. The kiddos used large numbers, letters, popsicle sticks, and our fall manipulatives as tools to explore letter and number concepts.

"I want to make a 'W'!" - W

"'X' marks the spot! Hexagon doesn't." - E

"What happens when I put my hat on it?" - W (Then rolls of laughter as the entire wall got dark from being covered with his hat...

Our study of Fall/Autumn came to a crescendo with our Autumn Party! Instead of focusing on the traditional holiday of Halloween, we learned about the origin of Halloween and the celebration of Samhain (pronounced SOW-in). It all began as a Gaelic/Celtic holiday in modern day Ireland...

*Bonfire Bonding*

We began our day around our community bonfire with an introduction of Samhain and where it was located on our globe. Back when Samhain was celebrated the villages and towns would come together around one huge bonfire! They believed this fire would c...

Our little friends have been very busy inventors, painters, and explorers!

*Leaf Collage Invitation*

Continuing our study of leaves and fall, we used our huge leaf collection to collage! Our Wednesday friends organized our leaves for us according to color which made it easier to choose which leaves we wanted to use for our masterpieces. This exercise was a great way for our minds to warm up in the morning as it took some good imagining and planning to foresee our leaf collage creation. We found that it was a little difficult for us to use the leave...

Leaves, leaves, and more LEAVES! Our collection of leaves from our nature walks has provided us with a plethora of nature inspired activities! Gotta love free natural learning tools! :-)

*Leaf Classification*

Over the past couple of weeks we have been separating and labeling leaves according to their sizes. This week we continued our practice with colors. The kiddos sorted through a basket of leaves and taped them onto the paper with the coordinating color written on it. This experience not only helped us distinguish color differences, but also hel...

We have been a very busy group!

*Color Mixing & Absorption*

Our kiddos have fallen in LOVE with our watercolor mixing area! We brought it back out again for another week, but added sponges, cotton balls, and string. These simple objects furthered our discoveries and conversations about a variety of topics. The kiddos found out that the sponges and cotton balls would suck up all the color and liquid! But, when you squeezed the sponges you could get all the water back out again! This task was easier with the sponges than it was with the cotton balls....
